Parks

Veterans Memorial Park

Location: Corner of Front and Main Street

The park, which opened in July 1996 and was dedicated in September 1996, honors veterans from Lewis County who were killed in action during the Korean War (June 30, 1950 to August 5, 1953). It is located at the corner of Front and Main Streets in Vanceburg, on the banks of the Ohio River. The Park is home to a beautiful monument picturing Lieutenant Commander Benjamin Thomas Pugh (October 21, 1920 - December 18, 1951). Lieutenant Commander Pugh, a navy pilot, served on the aircraft carrier USS Valley Forge during the Korean War and was killed when his plane was damaged on a mission over North Korea. Pugh was the recipient of many medals, foremost among them the distinguished Flying Cross.
