Vanceburg Depot Museum
The Vanceburg Depot Museum officially opened Saturday, July 7, 2001, during a
special public ceremony.

Negotiations about six years earlier to purchase the depot buildings between the City
of Vanceburg and CSX Railroad. The railroad had used the property as an office
and storage facility for a signal maintenance crew.

After negotiations were completed, with the City purchasing the property for $1,
funding was sought to restore the deteriorating building and grounds.

A $150,000 federal grant was awarded through the state, and was delivered by Gov.
Paul Patton in 1998. Patton also presented a $50,000 grant from surplus funding.

A complete, historically accurate restoration was done. Grant funding also paid for
landscaping and resurfacing the adjacent parking area. Display cases and
furnishing were also purchased.

A variety of historical displays including railroad memorabilia, local military history,
photographs, books, diaries and more are available for view when volunteers are
available to staff the museum Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. To 3 p.m.

NEW ADDITION TO THE MUSEUM'S DISPLAY---  A caboose now sits in the rose
garden of the Depot Museum.  A gift from CSX and when restored will be open to the
public as a lasting legacy to the Railroad and a Memorial to all Lewis County
Railroad Worker.
